How the sector readings work

Each of the 11 US sectors is read from its sector fund (XLK for technology, XLE for energy, and so on) by the same MacroInsight model as the headline reading, on the daily, 12-hour, 4-hour and 1-hour timeframes. The score runs from 0 to 100; the band (Risk-on, Neutral or Risk-off) and the trend word are the model's own, shown as it gives them. A sector the model has no score for on a timeframe shows a dash.

It describes current market conditions in each sector. It does not forecast returns and is not investment advice.

About this reading

The MacroInsight Macro Regime scores each of 36 major markets from 0 to 100 with MacroInsight's model and averages the scores into one reading, on the daily, 12-hour, 4-hour and 1-hour timeframes. The band places the reading from risk-off to risk-on; the trend word describes how it has been moving. Both are the model's own words.

Under "By sector", the same model reads each of the 11 US sectors from its sector fund on the same timeframes. A sector the model has no score for on a timeframe shows a dash; no score is filled in.

We check for a new reading every 15 minutes. It describes market conditions; it does not forecast returns and is not investment advice.

Questions

Still have a question? Get in touch.

What is the MacroInsight Macro Regime?

A 0–100 reading of market conditions across a fixed list of major markets, such as stock indices, sector funds, large stocks, bonds, currencies and commodities. Each market gets a score from our model, and the headline is their average, from risk-off to risk-on.

What do the bands and trend words mean?

The band (Risk-on, Neutral or Risk-off) places the reading on the scale. The trend word, such as Improving or Deteriorating, describes how the reading has been moving. Both are the model's own words, shown as it gives them.

Why four timeframes?

The same markets read on daily, 12-hour, 4-hour and 1-hour data. The daily reading is the headline; the shorter ones show how conditions look over shorter spans and change more often.

What are the sector readings?

The same model reads each of the 11 US sectors from its sector fund, such as XLK for technology and XLE for energy, on the same four timeframes. They are under "By sector" on this page. Each sector fund is also one of the markets in the headline reading.

Does it tell me what to do?

No. It describes market conditions as the model reads them. It is not a forecast and not investment advice.

How often is it updated?

We check for a new reading every 15 minutes. The time of the latest reading is shown on the page; a reading more than 36 hours old is marked as the last reading rather than shown as current.
